Awareness of environmental issues is growing in recent years, a new mindset coming into play, based on full waste reuse and recycling.
The improvement of welfare in today’s society, concerning a large part of western population and serving as a model for developing countries aspiring to a similar level of prosperity, led to widespread better economic conditions, industrial development, longer life expectancies, but, on the other hand, resulted in an excess waste generation. It has increased sharply, taking remarkable proportions in the last decades, leading to the current “waste emergency” almost worldwide.
The expansion of consumption notably resulted in the production of new substances that exhibit pollutant characteristics, which, once released into the environment, have caused and are causing sometimes irreversible damages.
Depositing waste in landfills is currently the most used waste disposal system, notorious for having significant negative environmental impact; for all these reasons people wish to have landfills placed far away from inhabited areas and places where their life takes place.
Awareness of environmental issues is growing in recent years, a new mindset coming into play, based on full waste reuse and recycling. Waste to energy plants, commonly referred to as one of the technological solutions to tackle this issue in a more effective way, both entail high construction costs and, despite their sophisticated features, create dangerous imbalances in the ecosystem due to the vast quantities of free carbon dioxide produced and to the huge oxygen consumption, as well as to dioxin emissions, caused by the presence of plastics in waste.
In addition, dusts decanted from electrophiles in waste to energy plants show traces of xenobiotics, dioxin-like micropollutants. Burning sludge and municipal solid waste release large amounts of sulphur dioxide emissions, which vapors from combustion change into sulphuric acid, thus increasing acid rains.
Emissions from waste to energy plants is currently a big problem to handle, in the absence of appropriate landfill sites for the ashes they produce. An alternative to waste to energy plants, guaranteeing a sound disposing of waste in an environmentally-friendly way for us and our children, has been studied for more than a decade of researches and analyses, in order to totally eliminate landfill sites.
A system has thus been established in Italy and patented all over the world, ensuring the disposal of any kind of waste except for harmful and dangerous ones and the full reuse of the result of industrial transformation to produce a variety of semi-finished and finished products for the building sector and areas such as urban infrastructure, agriculture, furnishing. It may be extended to many other areas for the great versatility of industrial production.
Axogroup, as the exclusive concession holder of the patent, promotes the “TRANS MSW” project in many countries, pursuing environmentally friendly objectives so as to trigger a permanent virtuous cycle, which will make it possible the full municipal solid waste recycle.
